The Question for the Water Works

Background: The City of Cincinnati Water Works provides about 136 million gallons of water a day through 3,000 miles of water mains to most of Hamilton County and parts of Butler and Warren Counties in Ohio, and to Boone County in Kentucky.

The Greater Cincinnati Water Works has been a municipally owned and operated utility since it was purchased by the City of Cincinnati in 1839. The current mission of this city owned resource is to provide our customers with a plentiful supply of the highest quality water and outstanding services in a financially responsible manner. Cincinnati water meets or exceeds national health standards.

The Question: The Cincinnati Water Works says they are committed to customer satisfaction! The Question we pose as owners of this organization whose revenues are over 90 million dollars a year - should not it be the city of Cincinnati and its residents who they should be helping first?

Huh? What are they neglecting? Your question is unclear. Are you upset that they service areas outside the City? Why? What does the City miss due to them providing this service? Please be specific.

Our position is that their primary client is the city of Cincinnati and its residents. We should have the lowest rates in the region. We should use this as a tool for the growth of the city and benefit to the residents.

No, we are glad to serve as many people as they can. Only from now on, those served should be served with the thought in mind of the revenue generated above the needs to create the service, debt service, should go to the Cincinnati general fund and or designated to support areas of need of the residents of the city.

We have an organization that has given away money, over $10M in scrap, to VSI in their recent $43M H2O Contract and does not obey the the then rules for Small Business Enterprises.

(Judge Nelson recently ruled the city Small Business Enterprise program dead, not that the Cincinnati Water Works was obeying it before hand. Read the judicial opinion -http://www.courtclerk.org/aps/ttl/lns/smcpb021.asp?A0402638First)

It is a $100M revenue generator owned by the city that operates not to the benefit of the residents of the city.
